Mayor Loomis Has Lame Excuse For Hilton El Con. Resort Giveaway

The Feb 19 Az Star has an article about more hotels coming to Oro Valley.

We must assume that's a good idea, based, perhaps on the movie "Field of Dreams."

You probably remember the famous words: "Build It And They Will Come."

However, what caught our eye in the story by Lourdes Medrano, was the last sentence

Speaking of the 2% giveaway to the Hilton El Conquistador, Ms. Medrano writes:

The policy that allows the resort to share the bed tax was adopted in 1999 to lure the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. LLC, which opted to build in Marana, Mayor Paul Loomis said.

You don't need hindsight to know that council decision back in 1999 was DUMB!
To date, WE have "kicked Back" probably around close to $3 million in OUR bed tax revenue to the Hilton.

Why? Loomis uses the lame excuse, that we tried "to lure the Ritz Carlton Hotel."

Great! Except we keep paying the Hilton, while the Ritz is now open at Dove Mountain in Marana.

Good job, Mayor Loomis!!!

At least THIS Council had the good sense to stop this nonsense.
