The vast majority of our readers that responded to our poll: "Is Vestar an asset or liability for Oro Valley," agree with us.
Only 28% believe their Marketplace with their lead anchor Wal-Mart, surrounded by mainly "no-name," not wanted retailers is an asset.
With Vestar flaunting Oro Valley's codes, with all the damage they've done to our water lines, with total disregard for the hours of construction, with the UGLY roof on Wal-Mart and other buildings that are visible from ground level, we wonder why anyone would consider this monster mall an asset.
We can only hope that the Town Council will hold Vestar's "feet to the fire," and make sure EVERYTHING is right PRIOR to their opening.
Yes! We're willing to wait for those 65 million dollars in sales tax, David Malin, Vestar's "snake oil salesman" told us we'll be getting! Yeah, sure!!!

Now we need to wait and see just how big a liability Vestar turns out to be.
My gut tells me that it is worse then we think.
How big of a liability is it? Look at all of the empty storefronts - all over the place. Simple question - if you wanted to open a retail store, what kind of a store would you open? Or would you fear that no matter what you offer, the Peoples' Wal*Mart will beat you down. I don't see any jewelers coming to Oro Valley (even where I grew up in a town of 10,000+ we had 2 fine jewelery stores). I don't see any 'upscale' clothing stores in Oro Valley; ladies of Oro Valley, where are they? Men, where do you go to buy a suit? In fact, I don't see any specialty stores here in Oro Valley - why not? Vestar and the Town blew it; we didn't have boutique type stores but could have if the right type of center had been built. Now we probably won't get any because of the inane approach our Town had taken relative to retail. So, the Town wanted $100,000 jobs and two-bit retailers and they were willing to give away the Town coffers to get both. What next?
