The Explorer had an article titled, "Arts Group in 'Dire' Straits."
The question is: Should The Oro Valley Council "Bail Out" GOVAC?
You may want to refer to our neighbor John Musolf's message which we posted on Dec 23.

No.
GOVAC should learn to budget or stop spending money they don't have.
GOVAC's treasurer is the husband of the Vice Mayor, Helen Dankwerth, an incumbent Council member who seeks re-election. Is any further explanation needed for doling out taxpayer money?
Yes, let's have an audit! Yes, let's stop supporting failing programs. Yes, let's remember who's footing the bill--the taxpayers!
It seems like a huge expense for GOVAC is bringing the Tucson Symphony Orchestra to Oro Valley...at something like $50,000.00 a pop.
Wouldn't it be cheaper for the Town to just hire a bus to take interested residents down to TSO performances in Tucson?
Also, I've been to lots of 4th of July performances all over the country where the local high school band provided the music.
We have two top-rated high schools here in Oro Valley. Wouldn't it be a lot more fun (and CHEAPER) to have them play at the 4th of July celebration, rather than the TSO for $50,000.00?
If one would check into the Edmonds Art Festival in Edmonds, WA. www.edmondsartfestival.com one would see how a really succesful festival is run and financed. Lots and lots of volunteer help. Why does GOVAC feel they must pay people???
As we experienced in the city of our prior residence, arts councils are a bottomless pit for 'donations' by city/county governments. Want an 'arts council' - turn the money hunger over to a private funding mentality. Art should either pay for itself or be funded by 'angels'; it should not be an entity forced upon the community, especially when the community has no say as to what the product might be. For a few persons to be the judge, jury, and executioner as to what is 'art' is simply without credibility. As for a community being told that it needs to be artsy fartsy in order to be 'up there' is ludicrous., Incidentally, I am all for art - exhibitions, concerts, etc., I am simply not for it being included on the public dole.
