Wal-Mart Looks To Solar Power

... but apparently the Oro Valley Marketplace store will not be one of the these solar powered locations. Click here to see what the roof design looks like with solar paneling. Nothing like the giant ugly mess the Oro Valley Marketplace's roof looks like (Click here to view).

Too bad. Solar paneling would look pretty good and would work really well, given our 340 days of sunlight a year.

Maybe this is what David Malin and Vestar meant by "unique".
Whatever you term it, ugly is a fitting description.
Really a disgrace and a big blemish
on the Oro Valley scenic corridor

My feeling exactly, mscoyote. At least, if it used solar power the building would have some redeeming feature. It would be a demonstration of responsible, forward thinking management.

Solar Power for a store that's the size of the Oro Valley Wal-Mart is a virtual no brainer.

WM and Vestar go 'green' - what a crock! No solar panals, just sky lights - that's huge. Once again it appears that this community has been gimmicked. In addition, with all the hoopla about the new WM sign design and their statement that stores opening in the fall would get them, I see that the old
one has been installed, in white, on the side of the building; more insult to OV. Overall, the architecture is mundane and old hat. So far, so bad!

OV OT, I think the answer to the question you pose relative to 'fact finding' is a simple one -if WM can provide it in 22 other stores, why not in Oro Valley? We get sunshine on almost a daily basis here so that's not a problem. So let's turn the question around and ask YOU, why not?

Solar panels on the roof???

Why would they even consider solar panels? Do you know what that would do to the aesthetics of their roof design?

And besides---solar panels would infringe on the scores of skylights and who knows how many giant air condition units!!!

Oh! By the way----the code says none of that "crap" should be seen from "ground level."

Vestar will probably argue that "ground level" is standing under their ugly white sign looking straight up.

Any reasonable person would consider "ground level" a location in close proximity with two feet firmly planted on the ground!

We sure hope they don't get away with that ugly roof that you can't avoid seeing from either Tangerine road or Oracle road----two scenic corridors.

At least they were scenic corridors until Vestar came along.

All one has to do is go to Addendum A, Design Guidelines, within the OV Zoning Codes in order to discover how many violations have been allowed and are being allowed in past, present, and future projects in this community; read them and make your own checklist - it will astound you (and make you sick). The responsibility for enforcement of these 'guidelines' lies in the hands of the DRB. One of the current members and at least one past member have imparted to me [well, these ARE only guidelines]. I've got news for these folks who can't even define what a set of guidelines are supposed to be - [a 'box' containing several options within it in order to allow for SOME flexibility, not a license to meander outside of it and ruin it's intent]!

Art,

Do you know the exact wording of the code that says structures on the roof shouldn't be seen from ground level? I'll bet it's ambiguous which will give Vestar lots of wiggle-room or it will say you have to not be able to see it when standing right next to the building.

I wonder if there are different considerations for times when the landscape is such that the building is on low ground and is surrounded by high ground or if this scenario simply isn't addressed at all.

Hi Cowgirl---- Forget the code. See Malin's own words on our posting

"Did David Malin & Vestar Lie To Oro Valley DRB?"

Can he wiggle out of this one?

We'll wait and see.
