We believe Dave Perry comes up short in his explanation as to why the Oro Valley Council cut the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce funding out of the 2008-2009 budget.
Perry zeros in on the fact that the Chamber saw fit to endorse Terry Parish, the loser in the last election. That analysis is correct, but there certainly were other reasons, and they were noted by council members during the discussion prior to the vote to cut their $27,500 donation.
Two good reasons are redundancy. Much of what the Chamber has done in the past, is and was accomplished by other outside organizations that are receiving OV funds.
Additionally, while the Chamber espouses the fact they are made up, and support the small businesses in our community, two facts can not be dismissed.
1) A large majority of members are NOT Oro Valley businesses
and
2) This Chamber saw fit to promote the entry of Vestar and the $23.2 million giveaway they will get from Oro Valley revenue while bringing us a Wal-Mart----the biggest and worst entity in sending small businesses OUT OF BUSINESS.

Once again Dave Perry demonstrates his lack of knowledge regarding Oro Valley history.
Dave is new to town so let's cut him some slack.
Still, his persistent predisposition to opine of Oro Valley matters without a firm grasp of the facts is troubling.
Agree.
However I would assume that Dave Perry should know this by now.
Maybe Dave is purposely ignoring the history for some other agenda.
We have not received the Explorer at our house for the last few weeks.
Wonder if the paper is going under.
Also notice that the letters to the editor seem to be less in volume and less controversial.
Time will tell
Many times people believe simply because that's what they WANT to believe. Of course Mr. Perry won't cite the other (many) reasons that were discussed during the process because those items might water down his argument 'pro chamber'. So, he attaches himself strictly to the Parish endorsement and thus his conclusion; flawed and biased at best. MR. PERRY, THE CHAMBER SHOULD ENDORSE NO ONE! THEY CLAIM TO BE PRO COMMUNITY AND SHOULD NOT BE A DIVIDING POLITICAL ENTITY!
What a slimy little worm that Dave Perry is.
"Readers may recall that members of the newly seated council were upset with recent public advocacy by the chamber’s political action committee. The chamber PAC, using money derived from private and not public sources, endorsed incumbent Councilman Terry Parish, who lost in the most recent Oro Valley Town Council election. That position was not forgotten by the victors, who decided to end Oro Valley’s contractual relationship with the chamber for visitor and business promotion services."
Um, exactly which newly elected council members told Dave Perry that they would not forget the Chamber's endorsement of Parish, and because of that, decided to end the Town's "contractual relationship" with the Chamber? Or is Perry just putting words in their mouths?
"Town Manager David Andrews and his staff don’t deserve criticism over this one. That said, it might be uncomfortable to see Andrews in front of a chamber crowd, the way new Marana Town Manager Gilbert Davidson was at a Marana chamber luncheon last week. Davidson expressed his regard of and consideration for the Marana business community, and encouraged a partnership. He was well received. The Marana and Northern Pima chambers are very different, in size and tone. Yet you wonder – can Oro Valley staff approach the chamber given the council’s funding decision?"
Again, what a slimy little worm. How much does the Marana Town Council give the Marana Chamber of Commerce? I'll give you a hint. It starts with a zero, followed by a decimal point, followed by two more zeroes. How dare Perry slander Andrews with his sewage?
"While the loss of money no doubt has a financial effect, it also frees the chamber to be more politically active, if it so chooses. Endorse candidates? Why not?"
Yeah. How's that workin' for ya?
How is it that this fishwrap decided not to mention that the newly elected council fully funded the food bank and partially funded the council on aging? Hmm. Maybe because they collect more advertising dollars from the Chamber and their sorry little political ads?
I think Dave Perry should focus on fundamentals such as getting his paper delivered to residents of his marketplace. We have not received his paper three out of the last four weeks and we are located in a subdivision in the middle of Oro Valley.
If it wasn't for LOVE we wouldn't know what was being published in the Explorer about OV.
Ditto, fear the turtle, and OV mom, a truly superior post!
OV Mom....Once again you have failed to meet the standards you attempt to set for others on this blog.
Zev...Your support for that kind of blogging is well below your standards.
