The following is was presented by one of our town's "Super Citizen's" Don Bristow during the "Call To Audience" at the May 2 Town Council Meeting. The remarks are in reaction to the proposed 2012/2013 budget which includes a $25,000 donation to The Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce ("The Chamber"):
We agree with Don. The Chamber is a private organization. It should receive no funding from the citizens of Oro Valley.

Why the Council should consider not funding the Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce:
- The Chamber is not a governmental organization
- The Chamber of Commerce is not an exclusive Oro Valley organization
- The Chamber is active in political and legislative affairs; therefore it is a conflict of interest to fund them
- The Chamber is not located in Oro Valley. Therefore, its rental payments are not supporting any Oro Valley property owners.
- The Chamber is made up of business owners, but not all businesses receive the so-called referral benefits of the organization.
- It is not possible to isolate Oro Valley funding from the overall activities of this Chamber
- The Town has already proposed the addition of 2 staff members for economic development which will benefit all existing businesses and the further the pursuit of new business opportunities.
- The Mayor has 3 business ambassadors in direct contact with every business in Oro Valley.
- The Town's website already provides a direct link to the Chamber at no cost to the Chamber
- At the last Council Meeting, a council member told us: "Markets determine actions, not the Town or its citizens." Therefore, it is up to the Chamber's market to determine the level of membership, funding and programs they are willing to support, not the Town or the citizens.

I need some clarification. I wasn't aware that we had a "Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce." I checked the Town website and connected to "Chamber of Commerce" which took me to a page for an Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce but the page was "under construction" which hints that this is a new organization.
Don's posting states that, "The Chamber is not located in Oro Valley." Where is it located? Is it part of the Northern Pima County CofC?
It's the same - just a new name!
As presented it is difficult where Don Bristow's remarks start and finish and where the propoganda of the blog begiina and finishes.
It may have been important to disclose to the public what the Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce must do to receive the funding. It isn't free money.
The Town of Oro Valley funds many entities outside Oro Valley. The are called employees. The goegraphical location is of no consequence.
The fact that some do not know who the Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce is, is a somewhat telling statement. It speaks clearly to the point that current events are not the individual's forte.

One problem with your thoughts is that many of us know what this newly renamed chamber has NOT done for Oro Valley.
Do not critize the opinions of others. State the truth!

There is a dark history here in the Tucson area, a history of converting taxpayer money into oversize private homes above Lowes Ventana Canyon Resort and Stone Canyon and funding large automobiles for the "leadership" of organizations which should be focused on public betterment.

Why is an entirely new agreement with the Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce on the Consent Agenda? It's interesting that the proposal now covers everything mentioned by Don Bristow in his Guest View. It's obvious someone was listening, but why is it on the Consent Agenda?
