Is It To Step Aside, Steve?

---
There are those who think that it is time for Appointed Council Member Steve Solomon to resign as council member.  He has served Oro Valley for 21 months, serving in the seat that was vacated by Salette Latas.  The council could not have selected a person whose views were more contrasting to Salette than Steve Solomon.

Steve Solomon ran for council. The voters did not elect him. The voters elected new Council Members Brendan Burns and Mike Zinkin.  Brendan and Mike will be seated in early June.

Perhaps it is time for Steve Solomon to demonstrate the grace of vacating the seat now for one of the two newly elected members.  What a great gesture.  What a great way to "heal wounds".

Why seat one of them now and not wait until June?

The reason is that there are many important issues which the existing council will be deciding in the next two months. The 2012-2013 budget may be one of them if Mayor Hiremath does not delay it.  Certainly, Burns or Zinkin should have input into these important decisions.  Since Solomon was never elected by the people in the first place, he does not represent the people.  Its time for Oro Valley to have an elected official in that seat.

Let us know what you think.

Take the poll on the left column of the blog.

Had Solomon been ELECTED he would have a understandable right to finish his term. He was never selected by the voters to represent them.

Given that he was APPOINTED, it is my opinion he makes uninformed decisions that requires multiple votes so he can flip-flop, treats residents with contempt and abuses public monies for personal gain, he is underserving, unfit to serve and should resign immediately.

Considering his character I think it's unlikely he will do the right thing.

It's a nice idea but I can't imagine Solomon would do it.

From a purely process point of view, Solomon was appointed to fill the seat and term of an elected official. That term does not end until the new council members are sworn in. While I believe Solomon to be a terrible council member I do not believe calling for his resignation to be good for the town. His term will end in due time and a new Council will be seated. Elections are a time of change and transition and neither should be rushed. The newly elected officials need time to come up to speed on the issues and to get their personal and professional lives in order before the demands of their political lives take hold.

I can't wait for Solomon to cast his last vote but knowing that it will come soon is fine with me.

The bigger questions is how he reacts to the election results. Will he exit with the class that Oro Valley deserves or will he just not show up to meetings. While I know what I would want him to do, I am not sure he has the make up to do it.

It will be interesting

It's sad and true... Solomon will not do it.

"Process" is all well and good, but the real issue here is the delay of setting the 2012-2013 budget. True colors will be shown if the precedent set two years ago is not followed this year....
