Superman Steve "The Trashman" Solomon To "Save The Police"

News Bulletin:

Steve "The Trashman" Solomon To "Save Your Police".

This sign implies that Solomon will "single-handedly" save the Police. It is for him and for him alone to do.

"Here I am to save the day."  Most certainly he is "Superman".

Just like with his past claims, it was he, and he alone who can save the day.

"Balanced the Oro Valley Budget" (by doubling the utility tax) and "Saved Coyote Run" (after voting to kill Coyote Run) his signs proclaim!

And now, this latest claim:  Elect me, Steve "The Trashman Solomon", and I will save the police.

From what, exactly, will you save them, Steve? From A management review?  Wow. Now that's a scary threat! OMG!

No candidate has said at any time that they would do anything that would reduce the quality and service of our fine Police Force.

All that has been said by this blog is that a management study of the police department should be independently done because:
  1. The police department budget is almost half the Oro Valley Town budget.
  2. There is no individual or group that works for the town that has the expertise to do this review.
  3. 5 members of the Oro Valley Town Council are or were endorsed by the Police Associations.  The relation among them and the Police Department is far too cozy for them to be able to independently assess police operations.
  4. All but one other department has undergone such a review.
Given their $12 Million plus annual budget plus countless dollars in grant money, the Oro Valley Police don't need saving.  They can and should stand on their merits.

Sorry Superman Steve, they don't need your help.

There has consistently been a negative bias toward the OVPD on this blog. I have seen it for years in the comments made by some posters regarding the number of police officers who respond to an accident. Or others who think the volunteer police force is a waste of money. Anyone who thinks this hasn't done his/her homework, talked to the volunteer police officers or the residents they assist, or talked to the police chief. I have read too many negative comments about the use of SROs in the local schools. In my opinion, the negative police sentiment displayed on this blog is uninformed and uncalled for. I do have to laugh about the concerns some have posted regarding Fred Narcaroti's brother-in-law being an OVPD officer. Someone even went so far as to suggest he recuse himself from any votes related to the police department. So if that's the case, I would also suggest that if Zinkin gets elected, he must recuse himself from any police department policy votes. Judging by Zinkin's list of traffic court cases (six in all), dating from July 1999 to August 2011, he either thinks it's not necessary for him to follow the local (both Oro Valley and Tucson) traffic laws or he may use his frustration regarding the citations when he casts council votes. (All of this is public record and can be found on the State of Arizona Supreme Court website.) I wonder if he can possibly be objective in his voting!

This implies there's something wrong with the police, that it requires saving. Interesting.

The negative bias, as you describe, comes from the fact that the OVPD budget consumes a larger proportion of the entire budget than other municipalities. Combined with our utility tax increase, there is a valid concern. Add the fact that the current council does not want an independent assessment of the OVPD, while it exercises direct management oversight of the organization, the appearance of "bias" exists. Furthermore, the OVPD has expressed interest in even further staffing increases, to 2.5 officers per thousand, considerably higher than the national average, despite the fact that Oro Valley is a low crime area.

Call it a bias, but the fact is there are a lot questions that don't have many answers.

Sheldon-- Don't you feel really safe blogging about such an outstanding citizen like Mike Zinkin while hiding behind that wonderful moniker; sheldon?

SHAME ON YOU, SHELDON!

PS--- I too have been cited by the same OV motorcycle cop more than once. When a cop lies in the town's magistrate court, and the judge buys it, you're bound to lose

And what do you think of the taxpayers paying the cop overtime to appear in Tucson Superior only to lose the case?

The website for the Arizona SUPREME COURT lists TRAFFIC COURT CASES!!??

Why?

I thought our masters in Phoenix were more interested in promoting guns in Government buildings and school yards and, of course, nightclubs and bars. But hey, Sheldon, I guess traffic violations are of high interest to the SUPREME COURT OF ARIZONA.

Sheldon,

What have you read that had negative comments about the use of SROs in the local schools?

A study would be helpful to even consider more funding for the police. Take-home vehicles could certainly stand scrutiny--are they really necessary? Do they save The Town money? Give us an official opinion by an outside source!

As I wrote in another comment, I do not think the "Posse" should be funded by the OVPD budget. Maybe the cars and maintenance should be supported by "special interest groups" like those who drive the cars and Sun City.

OVPD is doing a good job and I credit Dan Sharp and his dedicated staff and officers....

No one that I know of is talking pay "cuts".....however, take-home-cars and the Posse need to be analyzed.
