We recently mentioned that Mary Schuh is a friend and a friend to ALL Pima County residents.
Once again, Mary was instrumental in looking out for the interests of her fellow citizens. In addressing the NWFD board at their meeting last night, Mary convinced them to table the decision to give preferential treatment to the Ritz Carlton resort.
Mary based her argument on the recent Appeals Court decision in the well known Turkin vs. Gordon case.

Oro Valley Resident Responds To Explorer On Naranja Park "Crown Jewel" Editorial
Mr. Bill Peacock echos the sentiments of thousands of other Oro Valley voters in his rebuttal to a recent Explorer editorial on Naranja Park.

The OV ‘crown jewel’ concept has been beaten
Your editorial of Jan. 21, 2009 urges Oro Valley tax payers to “... make Naranja the central crown jewel of Oro Valley and Northwest living.”
Tax-paying residents just voted such a concept down.
I believe residents will pay for a park that is scaled to the needs of this community of 40,000, but will not vote to tax themselves to pay for a grand design intended to serve a non-tax-paying population outside Oro Valley.

More Details On Oro Valley Council Vote To Halt Subsidy Payments
Both the Jan 28 Explorer and AZ Star have additional details concerning the Jan 21 action of the Oro Valley Council that voted 6-1 (Mayor Loomis) to stop payments to all recipients of Economic Development Agreement funds.
The action was precipitated by the recent unanimous ruling by the Appeals Court in Phoenix in the. Turkin vs. Gordon lawsuit brought by the Goldwater Institute. The decision basically noted that a subsidy to one entity not available to others is a violation of the Arizona Constitution Gift Clause.

Controversial Increase With Oro Valley Home Building Fees
As reported in the Jan. 28 Explorer, the Oro Valley Council voted 6-1 (Al Kunisch) to increase the home building fees.
The rationale for the increase was, as Council Member Paula Abbott said, "“We need to get back every penny and dime that’s spent out.”
Homebuilder Steve Solomon noted, "“It’s ludicrous to say that developers aren’t paying enough to the town to cover expenses.”
One might say that both of these arguments have merit. Perhaps our bloggers may wish to opine of this issue.
