Oro Valley 2010 Budget Recommended To Be At $120M

The April 8 Explorer reports that Oro Valley Town Manager David Andrews has completed the proposed 2010 town budget at $120 million, down from the $203 million of last year.

Most of the talk about this budget concerns unfortunate layoffs, due to the state of the economy.

One area most contentious, is the recommendation of letting 6 police officers go.

Listening to the radio ads & newspaper ads from the police union, one would come to the conclusion that the Town Manager & some on the Town Council are responsible for this action.

That is not the case. Doing what is necessary, in these difficult times, Mr. Andrews stated, "Police Chief Danny Sharp came back and recommended (cutting) the Community Action Team."

Six officers make up the team, a group that combats drugs and violent crimes, according to town officials.

Those officers likely would take on standard beat work, while six officers with less seniority would face layoff.

It's not something that anyone wants to do, it's something that is deemed necessary by the town that finds itself in the same financial condition
as municipalities across the country.

I'm not so sure that is the case. If you were at (or listened to) the council meeting this issue came up in, it sounded to me like the Chief was given no choice but to cut people.

In fact, it sounded to me like NONE of the other departments within the town were offered any other solution to the budget problem but to cut people.

It's far too difficult, in my estimation, to find people who can pass all the background and training necessary to put a cop on the street. I somehow don't think ANY department would offer to cut police in order to balance a budget.

Wack job, wack job, wack job...in case you didn't notice, Oro Valley PD isn't South Tucson PD.

When over 50% of the Town's budget, especially a town where at least 25% of the population are retired people, where the community is generally considered to be 'upsacale', where the town is relatively easy to patrol, when the AVERAGE percentage of PD budgets in ALL of Arizona is approximately 28% and ours is over 50%, where you have a relatively 'easy' area to patrol and/or cover, where a special tax was enacted in order to cover TEMPORARY positions and said tax was SUPPOSED to be retired, when seemingly outrageous expenditures suddenly appear in their 'revised' budget format, then not only is it time to cut back on OVPD 'requests', perhaps it is time to investigate their whole
submission, LINE BY LINE!

Cutting bloated entities over the whole of the national scene (which includes local political subdivisions) is a must, if, any kind of local governances are to survive; we are affected just like the rest of the country. Our staffings, incomes, and budgets grew when our economies were growing and flush with income; the bomb finally hit and now we have to cut back - individuals are doing it, families are doing it, businesses are doing it, and face the fact that ALL sectors of local and state governments must do it (our Fed keeps spending and look what that potentially is doing to our future). ADAPT OR PERISH!!!

Suija,

Nombe didn't say that South Tucson PD and OVPD were one in the same. You keep misreading the comments. If you've been reading this site for some time you would know that Nombe's comments are far from "whack job." Yours on the other hand....

And, clearly, you're the sane one around here.

"fair share - fair share - fair share - fair share - back ground check my ass. (south tucson detective gets jail time) fair share etc."

What does my statement have to do with a miscreant in South Tucson??

Zev, I think the town manager should offer to give back his "bloated" $21K raise...but he hasn't, has he.

Suija,

I challenge you to go back to day one of this blog and read every post I've ever written and see if you can find even one that would indicate that I'm not sane.

If you don't like the way I have chosen to deal with you and your comments, understand this:

I treat everyone with the same amount of respect or disrespect that they show me. It was you who chose the tone of our debates.

You call this debating???

I call it a bitch-fest.

This "blog" is meant to help Oro Valley Excel; instead, all I see is a vast amount of negativity.

My original comment had nothing to do with you in the first place. I've read your comments and, IMO, you are paranoid, embittered, and a think-she-knows-it-all who claims to be a master debater.

Hee hee. (What are you, 12??)

Suija,

I tried to present facts and an intellectual debate. It is you who turned it into a bitch-fest and you who acts like a 12-year old. And with your "master-debater" comment, I rest my case.

Come back and join the "intellectual" discussions when you reach puberty.

I'll debate intellectually when 1) there is an actual debate, not the one-sided debacles you refer to as discussions and 2)I see a topic that actually requires more input than "Developers bad *grunt* Cops bad *grunt* Council members bad".

It would not be this much fun if we all agreed would it? Can we stick to the issues instead of childish attacks?

"I'll debate intellectually when..."

At last, Suija has admitted that she has NOT been debating intellectually up to this point.
