Highlights From The 2022 OVPD Annual Report

Highlights from the report
The 2022 Oro Valley Police Department Annual Report is out. You can access it here. It’s chock-full of great information about the Police Department and its accomplishments in 2022.

Fentanyl a huge problem
We read about the fentanyl epidemic in the national news. We even know that it is a huge problem in Southern Arizona. But when it hits Oro Valley, it really hits home. Several of the notable cases detailed in the annual report involve fentanyl. Other major cases include the insane driver who drove down Oracle Road the wrong way, killing himself and the driver of the vehicle with which he collided at the intersection of Pusch View Lane and Oracle Road; reports of domestic violence; the arrest of a Sinaloa Cartel member; and a case of child molestation, which carries a minimum prison sentence of 21 years.

Policing is a very busy business

Most of us think of the Oro Valley Police Department when we see the patrol cars on the street. But that’s just one activity (chart right). There are many other activities. These are organized into units.

The annual report presents the mission of each unit and its accomplishments. For example, the mission of the communications unit is to provide a vital link between the public and emergency services. The communications unit received 50,592 calls last year. That is more than one call per resident! 911 calls were 38% of these.  The unit dispatched aid in response to almost 16,000 calls.

Criminal investigations unit has a high closure rate
The criminal investigation unit closed 89% of 544 cases last year. Cases take more than one year to close. Over time the unit has an annual clearance rate of nearly 100%.

Violent Crime is low
Fortunately, Oro Valley is not a hotbed for violent crime. Last year, there were 20 violent crimes (homicide, sexual assault, robbery and aggravated assault).  What Oro Valley does have are major property crimes. There were 560 of these last year.  The primary one was 499 thefts.

There is a second category of crimes (misdemeanors).  These are called part two crimes. These include DUIs, drug abuse violations, vandalism, disorderly conduct, and sex offenses. Last year there were 1,079 Part 2 crimes. Two thirds of these relate to DUIs, disorderly conduct and drug abuse.

And so much more in the report
There is so much more information provided in the report. You can read about traffic enforcement, high visibility enforcement, the canine unit, and interagency activities. It's all in the 2022 Oro Valley Police Department Annual Report.
