Call to action
Tonight, the Oro Valley Planning and Zoning Commission will hold their second hearing on a rezoning request by the Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene (OVCN). The request is to rezone and create a separate planning area for acreage adjacent to the church so that the land can be used as a sports complex.
OVCN "needs you there"
OVCN sent an email to its members yesterday, asking members to attend. "WE NEED YOU THERE! We want to show the Town and the Planning Commission that we are serious about this project - that this project will have an eternal impact on our children, youth and families who live in the Oro Valley area and beyond. Those attending will have an opportunity to speak at the hearing and we want the Commission to hear from you."
Three "talking points:
- These facilities will enhance ministry. "OVCN sports is making a difference in the lives of children right now:
- OVCN has worked with Oro Valley town staff to mitigate the proposal facility "in all areas of concern."
- The new facilities will not be used just for athletics, but also for other ministry and worship services.
The email concludes: "So, I am asking for two things, that you pray for this meeting and that you to attend this meeting."
Planning and Zoning Commission vote tonight
We do not know what OVCN hopes to accomplish having its members flood the council tonight. Of course, they will speak in favor of the change. But none of the member live in the affected neighborhoods. Indeed, those who will be affected are unanimously opposed to this proposal.
The issue that the Planning and Zoning Commission faces tonight is one of determining whether the request suits the neighborhood into which the sports complex will be inserted. It is not an issue for them to decide if a sports complex will or will not serve the ministerial purpose of the Church.
