The Wall Street Journal reported today that Wal-Mart had held mandatory meetings with store managers and department supervisors in recent weeks to warn that if Democrats take power in November, they would likely push through the bill, which the company says would hurt workers.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson responded by saying; "We believe the Employee Free Choice Act is a bad bill and we have been on the record as opposed to it, but the company wasn't advocating that its employees vote against backers of the legislation. If anyone representing Wal-Mart gave the impression... they are wrong and acting without approval."

I read it, too. That's why--in many ways--it's more important who represents you in Congress than who is elected President, or state legislator, or Town Council member.
On the other hand, to wish for the failure of Wal-Mart is counter-productive, putting thousands out of work and forcing low income folks to shop at more expensive stores. If Wal-Mart is forced to increase salaries and benefits, the shoppers will pay the price because the stockholders will want their dividends.
An interesting conundrum, no?
You can dress a pig in a tuxedo and it's still a pig. Wal-Mart is NOT a plus for OV. Yeah---it would be terrible if they had to pay their workers a bit more, cover a drop more of their health insurance, bring less crime into the area, not to mention less pollution & traffic.
The bottom line is still what it is: Malin & Vestar screwed the people of OV with this WM.
If it was up to me, I'd hope they'd take the conundrum and put it on the backs of another location.
Wal Mart is what it is and hopefully
it gets so greedy and big it just self-destructs : )
Oro Valley Marketplace is going to be a big disappointment to most of us.
Aside from a few decent places to eat and the sporting good store what would entice people to shop there?
Gamesstop, sounds like some type of arcade for kids to hang out.
Sounds like an attraction for problems.
Check out the website for Styles for Less, lots of really cheap looking clothing.
Even in my younger years I would not have shopped there.
So recall those who said it would be nice not to have to drive to Tucson Mall to buy a nice shirt or tie. HELLO , anybody home.
If you want to shop for clothing you will still be going to the mall or ordering on the internet.
Vestar is a despicable co. in my opinion.
Not only the Wal-Mart, but they can't even come up with a few nice clothing stores.
Actually I hope Vestar goes under.
BB,
In response to your comment, "to wish for the failure of Wal-Mart is counter-productive, putting thousands out of work and forcing low income folks to shop at more expensive stores."
Where are these people working NOW? Where are these people shopping NOW?
While this is a stream relative to Walmart, at this point I would like to add that, given a choice between driving a little extra distance (for me, not for about a half of the more central and southern residents of OV who are even more closely located), I would opt for the Foothills Mall 'experience' - it is indoors and one doesn't have to drive from store to store to shop or to 'poke around'; it has, and will continue to have, a larger selection of stores, it has a bookstore, Barnes and Noble, which, for me, IS an attraction, it has an extensive variety of restaurants (not necessarily a draw for me), etc. That I go out of town and give someone else my tax dollars I say, too bad; Vestar AND the community didn't give the community what it was promised so why should I be loyal to the community chest? The selection of establishments is NOT brilliant as the OVM has puffed by in their website, but seems to be a rag-tag assemblage of so-so storefronts. Having been in the retail field for most of my working life, when I think of the different types of centers this could have been (and I don't mean another La Encantada), well, it just kind of nauseates me. To me, it seems apparent that Vestar was selected for this location because of their ties to Vistoso Partners, Conely Wolfswinkle, et al, not because of their concept. It also appears that Vestar's only orientation is to have 'ditto' centers wherever they go. I do find it interesting that they seemingly are yet having difficulty in filling the spaces with even some of those tenants that are established within their other venues. There will probably be an initial 'rush' when this place opens but the long term will tell a more accurate story. There will be another choice coming at I-10 and Tangerine as well as some enterprises in between and IF (and it's a big IF) much development takes place in Catalina area, you can rest assured that a center WILL
be built north of there (and here). Will this place succeed? Bill Clinton asked what the [definition of 'is' is]; I ask the question, what will be the definition of success?
It's an injustice that our community was saddled with this eye sore! However, we must be ever vigilant with our monitoring of their activities or the OV will end up slimed by this callous behemoth which will apparently do anything to get its way!
