I don't understand why the police cannot tell us specifically what gas stations were targeted. Then we would at least know whether or not our credit card may have been compromised.

How are they protecting the public if they withhold this information from us? Sounds to me like they are protecting the gas station owners who would lose business if their locations were identified.

It could also be they don't want to tip off the potential perp if they are monitoring the stations to see who comes back to collect the skimmer.

That doesn't make any sense. The police already made statements in the local paper discussing the fact that they already KNOW that someone is doing this. It was also mentioned on the local news.

If the police didn't want the criminal(s) to know that they were on to them, the entire story would have been kept secret so that the police could monitor the station(s) in question without the perpetrator(s) ever knowing that they were being watched.

But that didn't happen. The story was not kept secret. It was made public. So how exactly does making the story public prevent the criminal(s) from being "tipped off" that they are being watched?

And that brings me back to my original theory. The police are not protecting the public. They are protecting the business owner(s).

Remember most skimmers attach outside the ATM or other device. This case involved placing a skimmer inside the device....a bad development.
