Another "No" On Night Lights

In a letter to this week's Explorer, Kathy Pastryk ask the question:"How might lights all night help OV businesses?" Well, Kathy doesn't find a reason why they would.

As so many of you have previously noted in your comments on the lighting issue, it is highly doubtful that business lighting signs left on well into the night and well-after a business has closed will actually result in a measurable increase in sales for that business.... and increased sales tax revenue for Oro Valley.

There are no studies to support the contention.

One could hypothesize that the cost of keeping the lights on will far outweigh the benefit of added sales.

Pima County Opposes Independent Oro Valley Library

The Explorer reported today that the Pima County Board of Supervisors, by a 3-2 vote, denied Oro Valley's request for more funding for the Oro Valley Library. In addition, the Board also voted to oppose any attempt by Oro Valley to change State Law so the we can have our own library.

One of the Supervisors is quoted: "While I recognize that your community has affluence, that doesn't give you intellectual superiority," Elias said.

Are the proponents of an independent Oro Valley library actually saying that Oro Valley has an intellectually superior reader group?

There must be more to this movement than that if it has any chance of succeeding.

The issue, as Art has noted in a recent blog comment, is that Oro Valley residents are being double taxed for our library; and that if we can't change this then we need to be part of the Pima County System.
