Our Readers Are Emphatic--- Allow Pima County To Take Over Our Library

Our poll question, "Should Oro Valley Keep Control Of Our Library, Or Let Pima County Run It," left no doubt as to our reader's choice.

With 191 responses, only 21 (10%) said, "keep control regardless of the cost."

The overwhelming majority, 138 or 72% said, "Let Pima County Run It, As They Do Every Other Branch."

While we acknowledge this is a very small sampling of the population, our readers have previously proven to be quite astute in responding to the issues. In particular, they were quite emphatic in saying they didn't want the Naranja Park bond initiative and it was defeated by a 58-42% vote.

Although there are those that want to maintain autonomy with the library, it is evident the vast majority see no reason to pay mandatory Pima County Library Taxes, and continue to operate the library with a one million dollar plus deficit.

Thanks to all those that responded to the poll.

Following are the poll results.
Keep Control, Regardless Of The Cost
21 (10%)
Keep Control Only If It Doesn't Cost Us Almost Double
18 (9%)
Let Pima County Run It, As They Do Every Other Branch
138(72%)
Keep It If There Are Benefactors Willing To Absorb The $1M Plus Annual Deficit
14 (7%)
Total Votes: 191

As in virtually all other jurisdictions, this library issue should be resolved by turning it over to the county. Other than a distorted picture that Oro Valley is so special that [we don't do things the way others do], there is NO reason for us to cling to it. Aside from the fact that we must pay good money, better spent elsewhere, for our peculiar gratification of control, we seem not to receive benefits from the county that we as property tax payers SHOULD. Also, I would like to add that I see absolutely no reason that this item should be put off for another 18 months for resolution; the situation has already been studied enough! If this is simply a means to forestall a resolution until such time as a new 'administration' might be in place, then truly this is an indication that 'politics' is, once again, in play here.

To the Council Members who read this site, please keep in mind that although as Art said, the poll results on this site reflect only a small percentage of the OV population, the previous poll showed that the readers of this site were against the Naranja Park and it turned out that their poll response WAS reflective of the wishes of the majority of OV voters and the Naranja Park issue was voted down.

If memory serves, I believe another poll on this site showed that the majority of readers were voting FOR Garner and Latas and AGAINST Dankwerth and Parish, and again, that's exactly how the actual election day results turned out.

Now we have another poll showing that the readers of this site, by an overwhelming majority, wish to see the library turned over to Pima County.

Since the prior poll results on this site were reflective of the entire OV electorate, I think it's safe to say that this library issue vote would turn out the same way.

There is absolutely no valid reason to put off voting on this issue until July 2010 as the Mayor wants to do. It is clear that his reason (not a valid one) is so he can be re-elected PRIOR to this vote. Therefore, he is acting in his own interest and not in the interest of the people of Oro Valley.

You were all elected to represent the people. The council needs to point this out to the Mayor since apparently he is not aware of that fact!

Unfortunately, putting his off 18 months is quite a money waster.
