Wal-Mart Welcome In Oro Valley? You "Gotta" Be Kidding!

Following letter is from a Mr. Howard Richmond printed in the May 22 Az Star. Some may think "ignorance is bliss" might be an appropriate response.

Some in Oro Valley welcome Wal-Mart
In regards to Wal-Mart coming to Oro Valley. There are many of us who are happy to see it come and look forward to its contributions to the community. Wal-Mart is a well-managed company with bright, well-stocked stores.
Unfortunately there are those who rail against the company coming to Oro Valley. Perhaps they saw Tiffany as being an anchor store in the center. What they are really unhappy about is that the community did not support them in the referendum on sales tax credits to the developer. I suggest those people get over their hurt egos.

Mr. Howard misses the point. We are paying $23.2 million for a Walmart and a bunch of other AVERAGE stores when we were promised an upscale shopping experience.

Wal-Mart does not need welfare.

Hurt ego, Mr. Howard? No, that's a cop out for an easy sentiment against those who would be anti Wal-Mart for a whole host of reasons. You state that "Wal-Mart is well managed etc."; ACTUAL STATISTICS do not bear you out. The American Customer Satisfaction Index rates Wal-Mart Stores,Inc., SUPERMARKETS - DEAD LAST among competitors. The American Customer Satisfaction Index rates Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., DEPARTMENT/DISCOUNT STORES - DEAD LAST among competitors. Consumer Reports rates Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., MASS RETAIL PHARMACIES - TIED FOR DEAD LAST among competitors.

Like Wal-Mart if you will, Mr. Howard, but do not try to sell us on a fairy tale that Wal-Mart is what you say it is.

Wal-Mart will be a mediocre anchor in a mediocre retail center; this is NOT what the residents of Oro Valley were promised in exchange for their vote for an economic tax sharing agreement. In short, it was all a hoax! All in all, it MAY be a successful endeavor, but it also may have some serious fall-out effects, and in the end run, ALL things will have to be measured.

Whatever the result, Mr. Howard, my ego is and will remain intact!
