Initiative Drive To Conserve 570,000 Acres Of State Land

The April 12 Az Star has an article that notes the Nature Conservancy group is hoping to put an initiative on the Nov 2008 ballot that would ask voters to put more than 570,000 acres of state trust land permanently off-limits for development.

There is less than three months to gather the 230,047 signatures on petitions to qualify for the ballot.

The impetus of this initiative was a result of the home builders wanting specific provisions to bar cities from imposing new "impact fees" on new developments to buy the land for conservation.

Thousands of acres that would be preserved are in Pima County, including some in Catalina State Park & Tortolita Mountain Park.

Thinker,

Read the article and then read the comments posted at the end of it. Then you'll get an idea of what people in Arizona want to see happen with State Trust Land. I know you think it's just a few people on THIS blog who feel this way. The majority of people feel this way. It's basically only the lawmakers and developers who have other ideas...money-making ideas.

Cowgirl.....I did as you asked.

Statistically speaking, I am not sure 15 people should be considered "the majority of people feel this way."

As I said to Mr. Ryan when she called for my advice about the crematorium issue, the only solution is to buy the land.

There will always be a divide between those who support capitalism and those who support tadpoles and pigmy owls over capitalism. That will never go away.

The State Constitution mandates that the State Land Trust sell land for the highest dollar. I support that. If the law was to preserve the land, I would support that. I support the law first.

Thinker,

I know 15 people making comments isn't a majority, but my point was that ALL of the people who felt a strong desire to post a comment were all in agreement. They want conservation. Most of the posts I see on the AZ Star or the LOVE site or letters to the Star or the Explorer all express the same sentiment. I RARELY see a letter from someone on the other side, which is why I believe that the "majority" prefers conservation. If there is one letter that is pro-development and 15 letters that are pro-conservation, I think you can conclude something from that. Anyway, thanks for reading the article and the postings.

And yes, I will always support the wildlife and the natural beauty of the Earth over capitalism (money).
