We don't know Oro Valley resident Rick Cunnington but we are familiar with his propensity for writing letters to the editor with something to say about Oro Valley politics. His latest letter in the Aug 15th Explorer is a doozy! In it, Rick slams those who are opposing Wal-Mart as the anchor of the "upscale" Oro Valley Marketplace. You can read Cunnington's diatribe by clicking here.
His rant is, well, downright mean! Quoting one sentence:"Perhaps you'll get lucky and have a real tragedy in your life." We ask: Does he think before he writes?

Every letter Rick Cunnington writes to the Explorer is filled with vicious attacks and venom. He is nothing more than a junior high school bully. His letters are consistently filled with cliches. He is incapable of expressing an original thought. Why the Explorer continues to print this garbage is beyond me since Cunnington's letters serve no useful purpose. They are merely self-serving. He attempts to elevate himself by diminishing those around him. And that takes us right back to my junior high school bully theory!
Now, now Cowgirl, let's not viciously attack Mr. Cunnington. He has a right to his opinion and I think you will have to admit we long ago arrived at the point of whining about the Vestar agreement and Wal-Mart. Should the Explorer stop publishing your many comments because Mr. Cunnington may disagree.
And just to set the record straight, something it seems that I am the only one posting on this blog is interested in, Mr. Cunnington has written several articles that don't fall into the category of " filled with vicious attacks and venom". I suggest you read his article on Prop 207. Misguided as it may have been, it was very factual and contained no attacks or any venom.
Just because you disagree, is not a reason to stifle.
Hey for 23.2 we are entitled to "whine".
I remember this guy Cunnington writng nasty letters to the Explorer.
At the time I was surprised to see them printed.
He went beyond nasty with his horrible comment about having a real tragedy to Ms. Wright. I will give the paper and Mr. Cunnington the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a typo. Because if not, then the paper is
guilty also for printing his letter with that statement included.
But back to Ms. Wright, I agree with her, why not have more notification, it can't hurt.
Forgot to add something.
Thinker why get all bothered about Cowgirl calling out Mr. Cunnington but ignore the fact that Mr. Cunnington is the one who wrote the letter that is critical of those who express themselves and got really nasty with his terrible comment to Rosalie Wright.
Lets all hope his comment was just a typo. If not he is one sorry excuse for a human.
Thinker,
I'm glad you agree that Cunnington is "misguided." And any reasonable person who has read the dozens of letters he has had published in the Explorer would agree that he is also "very nasty." So you don't fault HIM for being nasty, but instead you fault ME for pointing it out! C'mon!
Thinker,
You said that Cunnington has written several articles that didn't contain vicious attacks or venom. Hmmm...let's see...
In November 2006, he stated that Mexicans were importing "poverty, despair and ignorance."
In September 2006, he stated that the poor people in New Orleans whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina were now just "getting fat sitting on their front porches with hands held out for a handout and a mouthful of gimme."
In August 2006, he stated that those who care about the environment and wildlife are "irrational and emotional."
Then, after noting his contempt for Mexicans, the poor, animals and the environment, he goes on to state that it's the democrats whose motto is: "hate, blame, be a victim."
Cowgirl....
Why is it, that when someone get's nasty on your side, you NEVER say a word. The resident self appointed king of OV (the blogmaster) has said some of the nastiest things, calling people ignorant and stupid. The 'poor' 'over-taxed' "Watchdog" has called the OV council and staff every name in the book.
You have told me in a round about way that I can't read and comprehend beyond a 6th grade level. How about your man who got up and made a statement about the crematorium reminding him of "The Holocaust." And then there was the good citizen that held up the sign that said, "No dead bodies here." That was sure warm and fuzzy.
I am not making any attempt to defend Cunnington. I just think he has the right to state his opinion. He has written some tough letters but that's life and as the old expression goes, "....... but words will never hurt me."
When we can't defend an issue we carp about style. Let's concentrate on content and not style. We have carried this political correctness crap way too far.
Thinker,
How do you equate the nasty and ignorant statements that Cunnington has made about Mexicans, the poor, and liberals with a statement like, "a crematorium will remind me of the Holocaust."
Suppose you witnessed someone you loved being shot multiple times. BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Now suppose someone wanted to open a shooting range in an area close enough to your home that you would be able to hear the shots being fired all day long. Do you think you might oppose that since hearing those shots all day long would be a constant "trigger" (excuse the pun) that would bring back that bad memory for you every single day?
"Oh, Great Spirit, grant that I may not criticize my neighbor until I have walked a mile in his mocassins."
Thinker,
You also need to read my last blog under the heading of, "Two Perspectives..." if you haven't done so already.
You'll see that we agree on "political correctness!" We both believe that PC is BS!
Cowgirl...
I'm not sure I follow your shooting analogy as it relates to the Cunnington letter.
I wish you would talk to Art about political correctness. He appeaers to think that for me to say anything negative about someone is naughty. It's fine for him to say people are ignorant and stupid however. But I guess that's just Art. :-)
Thinker,
My shooting gallery analogy was in reference to your comment about the people who protested the crematorium and the comment about it reminding someone of the holocaust. You have to walk a mile in someone else's moccasins before you can understand them. That's from a Native American prayer. Each one of us is who we are today because of everything that has happened to us up until this point. That's why we all see things differently.
So if you had witnessed someone you love being shot multiple times, do you think you would want to listen to the sound of gunfire every day?
