Vestar Will Take Our Millions, But Refuses To Talk To Us!

Diane Peters is one of the very articulate spokespersons for the grassroots group, OV1st. She has written a guest editorial to The Explorer. Read the way Vestar turned down an Oro Valley Council Member who attempted to arrange a meeting between the two parties. Vestar seems to be too good for our neighbors, but not too good to take $23.2 million of our future tax dollars. They're "playin' hardball"!

Read Diane's opinion piece by clicking here.

After reading it, you may also want to read the following letter from OV1st to the Oro Valley Mayor and Town Council on June 22:

"On behalf of Oro Valley First (OV1st) and the 3,000 people who have signed the pledge thus far not to shop at Oro Valley Marketplace, we would like to request that the Mayor and Council consider the following proposal.

We would like you to request that Vestar give another presentation to Oro Valley residents at the Town Hall informing us, the citizens, of the current status of Oro Valley Marketplace. Specifically, we believe Vestar should provide the following information at this presentation:

  • A list of tenants that Vestar has secured thus far.
  • A list of tenants with whom they are currently negotiating.
  • A list of tenants whom they plan to contact in the future.
  • A presentation of the actual design plan for OVM, including signage.
  • A Question and Answer session

Considering that we, the citizens, voted to give them $23.2 million dollars in sales tax rebates, we believe that another presentation is the least that Vestar can and should do for us. Additionally, considering that Vestar’s promises of an “extraordinary shopping experience” and “no new taxes” have proven false, we believe this request is justified and should be embraced by the Council."

Now, this sounds like a very reasonable request to us, given the nature of this project, the fact that Oro Valley is investing $23.3 million in tax rebates in it, and given the importance to the town. So, we ask, why hasn't this meeting happened?

Thank You to Diane Peters!

Not surprised that Vestar refuses to
do another presentation.
Why ??
I would like to know who Vestar is accountable to?

Obviously its not Oro Valley.
So far it seems only one council member is concerned that Vestar is not living up to its "promise".
Again, why is that?

Possibly a Vestargate in the works?

Good Morning Ms. Coyote.

"Vestargate"!!! I love it....another in a long line of conspiracy theories.

While I can't answer for Vestar I can give you some generic answers from the retail world.

Any developer will typically not discuss the retailers with whom they are negotiating because in many instances the retailer does not want their competition to know they are in negotiatoions and therefore they require the landlord to not reveal any information. As for who they will go to next, in large part, depends on who says yes and who says no.

As for meeting with OV 1st, I doubt that will happen. After all OV 1st has a goal of financially harming Vestar (and the Town, I might add). Individuals closely associated with OV 1st have accused Vestar of bribing elected officials and "paying off" Town staff. I don't think that creates a warm and fuzzy basis for such a meeting. But then that's just my opinion.

Have a good week.

Good Evening Thinker.

You like that one Vestargate!!
Ok, I better stick to the day job!

Myself I would be satisfied if Vestar
brought in some nice stores, not the same old , same old, and some nice restaurants, even if they are chain restaurants.

I also feel that once a Wal Mart goes in, it will not attract any nice or "unique" stores.
But I guess its always possible that trends could change in the retail world.
Think I mentioned before I love
to bargain hunt and would love to give some the sales tax to OV, but if Vestar brings in the same old
stores every other mall has, well
I will order online or wait for sales .
So you think that OV1st has accused Vestar of bribing some of our elected offical?
Honestly, can you say that you have not heard similar words from
others?
People possibly looking for logical reasons on why this deal was approved may come to this conclusion.
I don't want to think that anybody took a bribe, but it has crossed my mind.

When I think warm and fuzzy, Vestar does not come close.
I think that Vestar acted in a very deceptive way.
I know it's business, but they really conducted themselves in a shameful way.
Pity that honesty has no place in the develoment community.
In the short term Vestar got over on the people of Oro Valley. In the long term , well who knows, hopefully they will hve their so called good reputation tarnished.

You also have a good week, try to stay dry!
