Bits and Pieces

Meet the Rattlesnake Queen

Here's a "must see video" for you.  Filmed circa 1934, it is of Catherine Reidy, posted by her son Jim.  Catherine did her rattlesnake hunting north of Tucson which, we are guessing could have been somewhere in today's Oro Valley.  Apparently, she had quite a business!

Gives one a sense of what Oro Valley was like before it became Oro Valley.

Oro Valley Rated Second Safest In Arizona

Oro Valley is rated second, behind Sahuarita, as the safest town in Arizona, according to real estate company Movoto.

"We used the FBI's latest crime report for Arizona, 2012, and gathered the information for all of the places with a population of 10,000 or above. This left 42 places. From there, we looked at each place in terms of these three criteria: Violent crime (rape, murder, and assault) Property crime (theft, burglary, and motor vehicle thefts) The chance a resident will be a victim of crime."

Paradise Valley, the town Oro Valley was modeled after by our founders, rated 5th.

Homicides in Oro Valley Set Record In 2013

The Oro Valley Police Department posted its latest crime statistics.  2013 had a record-setting 3 homicides and a record-tying 20 aggravated assaults.  Larceny is 80% of all serious crimes.  Oracle and Magee is, by far, the most accident prone intersection in town.  The most frequent traffic citation?  Why speeding, of course.

The goal for police response times for all priorities is based on responding 90% of the time within specified time windows.  The Oro Valley Police Department exceeded its priority 3 and 4  call response times in February, with 94% and 98% reported results.  Reported responses for priority 2 calls were a bit shy of goal at 85%.  The reported result for priority 1 reposes was 62%.  There were 21 such calls.  Only 7% of calls were priority 1 or 2.
