The Mayor's State Of Oro Valley: Our Take

---
The following statements are quoted directly from the written text of Mayor Hiremath's address at the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce. This address was given yesterday. We encourage you to read all of the Mayor's remarks.

  • "Leadership is about making logical decisions…which may be unpopular due to emotion…and then being able to withstand the criticism until such time success is achieved."
  • To you, our residents: "We must meet each other half way in order for our local success to continue."
  • "We must become strategic instead of reactive. Think outside of the box, instead of being preoccupied with what’s already in the box."
We felt that these three remarks were particularly relevant because they provide an insight into the Mayor's belief system and they frame an insight into the standards by which the Mayor will make decisions.

His focus on logical decision-making, we think, precludes understanding the "human factor" so relevant to making decisions. It is not important to always be logically correct, as even Spock (Star Trek) would note. It is more important to develop solutions that work, which are often solutions that are human and "illogical".

His focus on "meeting each other halfway" is simply not workable. There are some decisions that are simply right. Some that are simply wrong. Halfway measures almost never work. "All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no give and take on fundamentals. Any compromise on mere fundamentals is a surrender. For it is all give and no take." (Gandhi)

We could not agree more with the Mayor's focus on becoming strategic and "thinking out of the box". Steve Jobs, the Apple Corp CEO who passed away on Wednesday, developed creative solutions, changed the way the world communicates and built the most valuable company in the world. Perhaps together, on a bit less grand scale, we can develop solutions that build the greatest town in the world.
