Our Oro Valley neighbor,Chuck Davis was astute enough to review the Town Council's Consent Agenda for the July 20 meeting. Chuck questions the new contract submitted and approved for the Acting Town Manager. Chuck negated to state that a raise was included, increasing the annual salary to in excess of $137,000.
No problem. Oro Valley taxpayers can afford it---and if not, they can always double the Utility Tax, AGAIN!
Below is Chuck's message.
*************************************************************************************
The agenda for the July 20th council meeting included the approval of a new contract for the asst town manager to serve as the acting town manger. It was on the consent agenda.
This contract called for 22 vacation days, sick days equivalent to other town employees (6 days, I think) as well as vacation days for Christmas and New Years eve. In total, at least 30 days of vacation, equivalent to 1 1/2 months, for an individual that has been a town employee for a brief period of time. Either the market for municipal employees is very tight; I doubt it, or our council is overly generous. In either case, it is hard to understand this decision in light of a buyer's market for human resources and the budgetary problems that Oro Valley is facing.
It seems to me that this is another example of the unwillingness to address our major cost factor (human resources) in a time when non-public employees are getting laid off, giving back vacation days, having their pensions reduced or eliminated, and having their pay reduced. While it is unpleasant to address this problem, it is what is expected of our council.
