The Explorer Reports On Recent NPCCC Candidate Forum

In a prior posting, we noted how we thought the N Pima Chamber of Commerce Forum went.

It left no doubt that Mike Zinkin IS THE ONLY VIABLE CHOICE FOR MAYOR.

Now you can read The Explorer's take in Patrick McNamara's article.

"'100 percent I'm in favor of supporting MTCVB,' Hiremath said."

[Loomis is quoted as giving a standard, politically correct non-answer.]

"Snider said the town could designate specific tax dollars to fund the organizations."

Okay, I'm starting to agree with Victorian Cowgirl's assessment of Mary Tax-and-Spend Snider.

[Zinkin, Rabb, and Finchem are quoted as supporting performance-based contracts.]

"Hiremath and other candidates issued their objections to that form of contract, saying it showed a lack of respect."

Lack of respect? For the good-old-boy system of tax-and-spend financing that you all seem to admire so much?

"'This pay-for-performance, it leaves a bad taste in people's mouths,' Hiremath said."

Of course, as a dentist, Hiremath is probably an expert in what leaves a bad taste in people's mouths, but he seems pretty clueless when it comes to fiscal responsibility.

"Carter, more bluntly, said the idea was 'baloney.'"

Then why did he vote on performance contracts for these organizations every year, and then vote to stop funding them?

"'It's a bundle of confusion,' Carter said. 'The whole sign code business has to be looked at.'"

While Carter's confusion is often painfully obvious, so is the question as to what he has been doing on council for the past 6 years. If something needs to be looked at, why hasn't he been looking at it?

"Loomis said the code was outdated and needs revision."

Again, what has he been doing for the past 12 years?

[Zinkin gives the only knowledgeable, corageous answer to this question.]

"No candidate explicitly supported putting a property tax on the ballot."

Then why does Hornat say in another interview in the same edition of the same paper "yes I would let it go to the voters for a decision."??

"'Only as a last resort I would support a property tax,' Loomis said."

Then why did he start promoting it during his state of the town shin-dig last September?

I almost left early on several occassions due to the fact, that the same questions were asked several times. It was almost as though the Chamber was using the Forum to promote their ideas. Were most of the candidates afraid to answer the question truthfully, so as not to upset the Chamber? That is what it looked like
