The volunteers in the patrol cars provide valuable services like checking homes while owners are away, and/or checking on elderly who live alone. They also assist with traffic issues (like the parade). Ferlin--I suggest that you join the group to see what it's like. Or perhaps you lack confidence in your "human relations" skills? ;-)
As for other volunteers, I fear that it will be like herding cats. There will be good intentions, but the volunteers cannot be compelled to stay and work if they want to go on holiday or back to Michigan for the summer. And what happens when a volunteer gives advice or assistance that turns out to be wrong? Is the town liable for damages? OV has a great history of volunteerism, and we can only hope that this program will fill a short-term need. Bloggers--let's get off of our opinionated butts and help out here.

What if some of the people riding around in "Volunteer Patrol" cars could help in the offices?
Are they a waste of taxpayers' gas?
Put them to work in something constructive--I just bet they would be good in human relations :)
