As reported in the July 25 Explorer, The Oro Valley Town Council passed a $118.8 2007-2008 budget.
One issue that might be of interest is the Naranja Park site.
Quoting Town Manager David Andrews, “We don’t have enough cash reserves to fund even one component of the Naranja Town Site.”
Early in the budget process some council members suggested the town use the unspent money to fund part of the proposed Naranja Town Site, a municipal park complex that could cost more than $150 million. ($155 million was the last number we heard, not including annual operation & maintenance costs.)
Andrews said to finance such a large project like the town site with a “pay-as-you-go” plan would wipe out all cash reserves.
It seems the town doesn't have the money, so what better place to go, than the poor, over-taxed citizens. You can expect a ballot issue for either a primary property tax or a secondary tax. Either way, you'll pay for the park. How much is the question.

Where oh where is fiscal restaint? The Council members are out of their minds.
Voters would be out of their minds if they elect most of these people again.
Oro Valley is spending money faster then we can make it.
David Andrews is writing contrary to what I would expect of the "hired Town Manager"..... I do not trust him; however, I believe what he has stated is true.
There is not enough money at this point for the Naranja Extravaganza--without increased indebtedness or taxes or both.
I do not trust the Town Manager, David Andrews. He hired Melinda Garrahan and Sarah More. They gave us The Crematorium, aka the Town Council Memorial Chapel.
Gosh, I was hoping that writer (deleted post) would give me a lesson in the Town Manager system.....
Of course, David Andrews is not totally responsible. The Town Council approved of their being hired. (Garrahan, More) Everyone goes along with The Program.
ferlin - I started to and then decided you wouldn't listen anyway so it wasn't worth my time.
This may (but it really shouldn't)surprise some of you, I completely agree that this budget is not good work product. In my letter to the Council I strongly suggested that we pass a budget that reflected no increase in spending over last years budget and that any COLA increases be eliminated and be replaced with a merit system only. In doing so we reward high performers and not the below average hang-ons.
Not a lesson in the Town Manager system but the Town Manager had nothing to do with the hiring of Melinda Garrahan and until very recently didn't even figure into her performance evaluation. The Town Council only, interviewed, hired, fired and evaluated the Town Attorney. As for More, I believe Brent Sinclair was responsible for her hiring and I too would just as soon see someone else in her position. But from what I hear, she (More) was strongly influenced by Garrahan. Those who know me well know that I have advocating for Garrahan's replacement for many months. She was, in my opinion, not performing in the best interest of Oro Valley.
Thank you, ov objective thinker. I do not know where the blame lies, but there is something rotten going on with our Town. :)
The Town Council seems to have felt that they were not responsible for their crematorium--aka, The Town Council Memorial Chapel. ????
Ferlin.....
With all due respect...if you do not know what is going on then please do not make unfounded accusations. Davis Andrews is a good and honorable gentleman who will do a good job.
What bugs me the most are postings and comments that are completely erroneous, so subjective that they are laughable and just simply conjecture.
Allow me to quote you...."I don't know where the blame lies, but there is something rotten going on with our Town."
LEARN WHAT IS GOING ON!!! It's your responsibility, not mine.
Cyclone1...please post. Most of the people here are educated and they will respond. It's healthy and fun!!!
